Since ancient times in Rus', the main sign of a person’s wealth was the decoration of his home.
And since the dominant place in the house was occupied by the stove, which saved from the cold in the winter cold, was used for cooking, and also served as a bed, its decoration was given a special role. In order for the stove to look beautiful and retain heat better, the best solution of that time could be considered to be facing it with tiles.
Tiles are specially shaped ceramic tiles. The surface of the front side of the tile could be smooth or embossed, glazed or not. The back part usually had a special frame (rump) with small holes for wire. The pump was needed to attach the tile to the surface of the stove. The tiles were installed during the laying of the stove, using wire attached to a pin threaded through the holes of the tiller.
The technology of facing work was as follows: the tiles were connected to each other with special staples (sometimes using masonry mortar, and sometimes without it), and a wire attached to a rod threaded through the holes of the tiller was inserted into the seam of the brickwork. In addition to the aesthetic component, the tiles also performed other important functions: they were a fairly durable cladding, had a high heat capacity, and were absolutely fireproof. The main confirmation of these qualities are the monuments of this unique folk craft that have survived to this day.
