Durable like granite

Granite is one of the densest, hardest and most durable rocks on earth. No wonder there is such a stable comparison: durable as granite. Granite is one of the main materials used by nature to create the earth's crust. Geologists even call it the hallmark of our planet.

Natural granite almost does not absorb moisture (water absorption 0.05-0.2%); does not burn (melting point +700 degrees Celsius); has increased hardness (Mohs hardness 6-7), strength (compressive strength 100-300 MPa) and density (2.6 g/cm 3 ); The color range of natural stone is extremely rich: it can be blue-black or soft pink, almost scarlet or ocher-golden. In a word, granite has many advantages and only two disadvantages. Firstly, it is quite expensive, and secondly, its deposits are often accompanied by an increased background radiation.

The production of ceramic granite has many similarities with the natural process of structure formation of rocks in nature: in both cases, under the influence of high pressure and high temperatures, a low-porous structure is formed. Only in the workshop of nature this procedure is extended over thousands of years and is subject to various accidents, but in the conditions of modern industrial production everything happens quickly and in strict accordance with proven technology. Therefore, in nature, even in the same deposit, there may be representatives of the rock that are different in structure and physical and technical properties - with cracks, cavities and defects, and the characteristics of porcelain tiles that come off modern production lines are stable and predetermined. However, the randomness of natural manifestations contains not only weaknesses, but also strengths. It is unpredictability and uniqueness that gives rise to the aesthetic phenomenon of natural stone, making each rock sample unique and inimitable in color, play of tones and halftones, and intricate pattern of veins. It turns out that modern computer technologies, which are used in the production of ceramic granite, make it possible to simulate accidents so that the surface lined with ceramic granite is almost indistinguishable from that of a stone made in nature’s workshop.

In its homeland in Italy, ceramic granite is called gres porcellanato: porcellanato - porcelain, porcelain-like; gres - ceramics. The term gres is borrowed by Italian from French, where it has been used since the 19th century to designate low-porosity (so-called vitrified) types of ceramics, particularly stoneware. If the Italian name conveys the essence of the process of producing such tiles, then the domestic term reflects the very essence of the material: ceramics, as strong as granite (and in practice even stronger). Indeed, in Russian, granite is one of the symbols of strength and durability.
